Decarcerate PA chapter opens in Pittsburgh
We are very pleased to announce that Decarcerate PA has recently started a chapter in Pittsburgh. In early November, three members of Decarcerate PA traveled from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to meet with groups doing anti-prison work in Pittsburgh to talk about possible collaboration. The meeting was organized by the HRC Fed Up chapter and hosted by New Voices Pittsburgh: Women of Color for Reproductive Justice. Also in attendance were representatives from the Women’s Law Project, the Pennsylvania ACLU, the Formerly Convicted Citizens Project, Divine Intervention Ministries and the Alliance for Police Accountability. Those of us from Decarcerate PA Philly gave a presentation about what we had been working on, which was followed by a lively discussion and some collective brainstorming about how to stop prison expansion. At the end of the meeting, folks in Pittsburgh decided they wanted to continue the conversation and take action, and the Decarcerate PA Pittsburgh chapter was born.
